The Irish are cynical. The William Butler Yeats stereotype is one of constant tragedy, sustained through temporary, disproportionate periods of joy. It can be adorable, at least from a distance. Just watch the Irish folks in the video above try various craft beer for the first time. They hate in a loving, charming manner that makes me just want to squeeze them. The first Irishman to speak drops a garbled exclamation that ends in a “mother fuckers.” Known as stout-loving worshipers of Guinness, the Irish like beer, but not all beer. Some comments about craft beer from the video’s participants:
- It’s beer hipsters drink.
- It’s like a fashion thing now, isn’t it?
- I taste beer. I don’t read it.
- This is a beer Hobbits would drink.
To counterbalance the argument, there’s a solid comment from the YouTube post: “I really enjoyed all your other videos in this series, but I feel you did America’s craft brewing community a disservice. All you gave them were sweet, niche, gimmicky beers instead of just plain good craft beer.” Hey, we wouldn’t want to see the Irish too happy, would we?
