To celebrate its Mississippi Ave. location, Von Ebert Brewing transformed a 20,000-gallon silo into a hand-painted Volatile Substance IPA can — and released a fresh hop version to match
There are big beer cans. And then there’s Von Ebert’s new silo on North Mississippi Avenue in Portland — a 12-foot wide, 26-foot tall fermentation tank now painted to look like a can of Volatile Substance NW IPA. If you could actually walk by and crack it open, it could serve roughly 158,000 pints.
This hulking, hand-painted homage to Von Ebert’s flagship IPA marks the latest creative swing from the brewery, which opened the Mississippi Ave. location earlier this year as a major production expansion. The silo now doubles as both functional brewing infrastructure and larger-than-life branding.
“We wanted to return the favor, not just by serving delicious beer at the taproom, but by bringing even more people to this quirky, iconic street,” said brewmaster Sam Pecoraro. “Come by for a selfie and a pint.”
To toast the unveiling, Von Ebert dropped a surprise fresh hop version of Volatile Substance, brewed with Mosaic hops from Coleman Agriculture. The release follows three other fresh hop beers earlier this month and will be available on draft only for a limited time.
Built by community
The project was completed with help from local mural artist Allison McClay, who hand-painted the silo into a full-wrap beer label. Like much of Von Ebert’s new taproom, the can mural reflects the brewery’s support of local partners. Décor elements came from nearby nursery Pistils, and the on-site food truck, HarBQ, adds even more draw to the brewery parking lot.
Von Ebert’s Mississippi expansion boosts its annual production capacity from 4,000 to up to 20,000 barrels, allowing it to scale core brands like:
- Volatile Substance NW IPA
- Sector 7 Hazy IPA
- Pils (German-style Pilsner)
- Clubhaus Lager
All are available in 12 oz cans across the brewery’s Portland locations, bars, bottle shops, and grocery partners.
